37. An assessment of the health effects of 5G
Today, several telecommunication companies are racing to deploy the fifth-generation (5G) technology and are coming forward with their respective cellular plans. The technology is perceived as a revolution in itself. 5G is not just an incremental update of 4g, it will change the way we communicate. However, did you know that 5G can affect your health too?
The problem lies in the fact that 5G as a wireless technology uses extremely high frequency, which lies between 30Ghz to 300Ghz. For 5G to be safe, there is a need to reduce the electromagnetic field exposure emitting from the wireless source. This needs to be addressed before 5G is launched in the world.
In this age of technology, the environment is already exposed to artificial magnetic, electric and electromagnetic radiations. The concentration and intensity of these radiations are increasing every day. The functional systems of humans, animals and plan have as been superimposed by the electromagnetic radiations.
According to Paul Heroux, professor of toxicology and health effects of electronagnetism at the McGill University Health Center in Canada, the electromagnetic radiations are bad because living beings are not adapted to it. This leads to a disruption in the biological system and metabolism. In fact, a higher frequency, such as the one used by 5G, will also penetrate deeper into the human being. A report by the World Health Organisation concluded that traditions are 'carcinogenic to humans'.
Hence, to prevent the environmental hazards caused by the revolutionary technology, the deployment of 5G should be halted until a proper framework is prepared that considers the harmful effects of the radioactive waves. There have been a few positive changes in this direction. In 2017, 180 researchers from 36 countries urged the European Union to set up an independent task force to access the impact of 5G on human health. Earlier in 2015, US scientists made a similar appeal to the UN Secretary-General and World Health Organisation. However, a lot of issues needs to be address in this regard.
