The global fashion industry is not known for being environmentally sustainable. It is one of the most polluting industries in the world. The debates about boycotting fur coats, leather jackets have been going on for decades. Indeed, it is time to make the fashion industry eco-friendly and sustainable. And a few brands are doing exactly that.

Conscious fashion, also known as eco-fashion or ethical fashion is the new alternative trend against the so-called ‘fast fashion’.  The concept takes into account the element of sustainability and aims to reduce the environmental damage caused due to the entire operation of the fashion industry. It intends to put an end to the harmful effects of fast fashion on our planet.  The concept is gaining immense attention and has been making headlines in major fashion publications such as Vogue and Elle.  Today brands like H&M are well known for their recycled and organic fibers.

Conscious fashion takes into account the entire operation of the textile and clothing industry, right from procuring raw materials used in manufacturing to the use and disposal of the products. It is also concerned with creating a positive impact on the workers involved in the supply chain. Conscious fashion is proof as to how sustainability and creativity can go hand in hand.

Today, we observe a growing awareness amongst the consumers about the harmful impact of fast fashion to the environment. Fashion retailers have started to take action. No wonder, sustainability is the new buzz word. Yet, awareness about conscious fashion is limited. There are other drawbacks too. Sustainable fashion is priced at a premium. Yet, investments in sustainability can pay off in the long run.  It is high time we talk about the overconsumption of clothing and the carbon footprint of the fashion industry to promote conscious fashion among the consumers.
