61. The Message Traingle
A message triangle is an effective tool that can help a
communicator speak to his/her audience effectively. The concept is based on a
simple fact: it is easier to visualize an image than it is to memorize a lot of
words. The message triangle is universal, it can be used for any kind of
content: a speech, an interview, a blog or even a thesis.
At the center of the triangle is the core message. It is
important to note here that this core message should not be more than 7-8
words. If the message exceeds the word limit, maybe it is not your core
message. Each side of the message triangle represents a broad message, and each
of these messages is equally important. So what are the three sides of a message
triangle?
The first side represents 'Supporting Facts'. The core
message of your writing should be supported by specific facts. Here you can
take the help of the 5Ws and 1H technique, namely: Who, What, When, Why and
Where. These are considered as the basics when it comes to information
gathering or problem-solving.
Secondly, the core message should be backed by data points.
It is no longer a secret that data can help you support your argument. The data
points should be from a reliable source: be it primary or secondary. At the
same time, if you are including data or statistics, it is worth mentioning as
to why you have included the specific data. A writer should not leave it to the
reader to work out the implications of any statement.
The third side represents 'Interest', which means ‘what do
you want to achieve from your writing’. This section attempts to answer any
question raised in your writing.
As mentioned, each side is important. You can start with any
key message, not necessarily the first. Whenever the writer needs to
substantiate on any of the key points, they can simply add onto the triangle.
How can the message triangle help you? First, it can offer
focus and shelter for your innumerous thoughts. It is a simple way to create
great content. The message triangle can also help the communicator in writing
short and crisp content. Lastly, a message triangle is very easy to use.
There are several elements of good content, but having three
points and emphasizing these three key points can make your writing appealing
to the target audience.
